The Gran Teatro de La Habana “Alicia Alonso” is a Cultural Institution that is distinguished by its beauty and elegance, decorated with exquisite and refined taste: the luxury of lighting, the curtain, the patio and the boxes adorned with magnificent armchairs, sorround it with an incredible brilliance.
It is located at Paseo de Martí No. 458. Havana, Cuba. It is one of the icons of the city of Havana and seat of the National Ballet of Cuba since 1965, the National Lyric Theater and the Spanish Ballet of Cuba.
A little bit of history of the Gran Teatro
The Gran Teatro de La Habana was built in 1837 under the orders of Governor Don Miguel Tacón and in his honor was baptized with the name Theater Tacón.
The construction was in charge of Francisco Marty Torrens. Later it was called Don Tomás Estrada Palma Theater, then National Theater, then García Lorca Theater, Gran Teatro de La Habana and in September 2015, the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba agreed, on an exceptional basis and in recognition of the contributions of Alicia Alonso to Cuban and universal culture, call it Gran Teatro de La Habana “Alicia Alonso”
Inaugurated on April 15, 1838. It was the largest and most luxurious theater on the American continent and was frequented by the Creole nobility. The Society of Beneficence of Natural of Galicia, bought it in 1906, demolished it and made the present building to establish the headquarters of the Galician Center of Havana.
The construction was in charge of the Belgian architect Paul Belau. In this place the Galician anthem was sung for the first time.
The complete building was renamed Gran Teatro de La Habana in 1985 at the initiative of the well-known Alicia Alonso, although its main hall was named García Lorca. It has been the main stage of the International Festival of the Ballet of Havana where prestigious figures of dance of all the continents participated: dancers of the Scala of Milan, of the Royal Ballet of London, the New York City Ballet, the National Ballet of Cuba under The direction of the celebrated Alicia Alonso, among other well-known companies.
In this masterly institution have been presented famous international artists such as the Russian dancer Anna Pavlova, musicians Arthur Rubinstein, Polish pianist and Sergei Rachmaninov, composer, pianist and Russian director and lovers of operas, operettas and zarzuelas, among others. Between the most outstanding presentations that have risen on the stage we can mention the Italian sopranos, Adelina Patti and the Spanish Victoria of the Angels, the Spanish dancers, Carmen Amaya and Antonio Gades just to mention some of the famous ones.
They have received the Gran Teatro de La Habana Award: Alicia Alonso and the National Ballet, Antonio Gades (Spanish), Cuban Rosita Fornés, Esther Borjas, Barbarito Diez, Josefina Méndez, Dulce María Loinaz, Pablo Milanes, also Daniel Barenboim, pianist and Argentine director, Marcel Marceau, mimo French actor, Vladimir Vasiliev, Russian dancer of classical dance and other great in diverse artistic manifestations.
It was an honor for the Gran Teatro de La Habana “Alicia Alonso”, for the National Ballet of Cuba and for the Island of Cuba, to receive on October 30 this year, the visit of the Princess of Monaco, Carolina Grimaldi, the Which accompanies the company of the Principality of Monaco on the occasion of its participation in the 16 International Festival of Theater of Havana.
